Before

The Sanford Maine ATV Club maintains miles of ATV riding trails in southern Maine. The Club is a great group of people who donate much of their own time and resources improving trail systems on public and private lands. A 600-ft long swampy section of trail was ultimately impassable due to the deep ruts and uneven surfaces caused by poor subsurface conditions. The massive ruts within the peat moss filled with water causing larger deep puddles – impassible for riders. Many riders were also widening the trail by attempting to go around the swampy/rutted middle section of trail. This ultimately created an even larger swamp section with incresingly difficult conditions for most riders. Additionally, a recently built $78,000 snowmobile bridge was also inaccessible because of this impassible trail section.

Preparation

The Club had seen a plastic grid system used before and were looking for similar system which was easy to install and would keep their ATVs from sinking into the peat moss. The grid also needed to be durable to withstand the repeated use in harsh conditions. Also, improving the trail’s subsurface conditions was not an option so the grid system alone would need to provide the vertical support necessary. Because of the existing conditions there was no prep needed for this install. Just a solution for dangerous terrain.

Installation

The Ecoraster E50 Grid System was placed on top of the swampy trail section 6 panels wide. As Ecoraster is delivered in sheets, it was very quick and easy to lay large sections down at a time. The locking mechanism of the E50 Grid System firmly holds the panels together while still maintaining malleability under the ATV tires. The E50 Grid System panels are light, easily transported and the installation was straight forward.

After

The trail was immidiately useable once the E50 was laid down and the snowmobile bridge also became accessible. Over time it is expected that the grid will sink into the ground, but only to a certain point where the grid will still provide vertical support even if it underground/underwater. The Club considered a competative product that was used in the next town over, but the Club found that the E50 Grid System’s locking panels are superior, and the price point was much better. They also really appreciated the information and support that Ecoraster Distributor ACF provided throughout the process.
